COPING WITH PET LOSS

Preparing for the loss of a pet is always difficult. When a pet is critically ill or injured, owners should, plan ahead to help minimize regrets.

Talk to the pet. Owners should take time to say all the things they want their pet to know, even if they have said them a million times before.

Think ahead about how to say goodbye. Owners should decide what is important to them in saying goodbye, and create an ending that is meaningful. How would they like to celebrate their pet's life and honor its death?

Talk to the veterinarian. Some owners may find comfort in better understanding the euthanasia process. They should express their fears, concerns and needs, as well as learn what to expect if an elderly pet dies naturally at home.

Include children in the goodbye process. Children often are very attached to family pets. They should be involved in decision-making and memorializing at a developmentally appropriate level.

Create linking objects. Linking objects, such as favorite photos, help owners remember their pets.

Honor grief. Owners should be gentle with themselves before, during and after a pet dies. Grief is taxing, and owners should not expect to be able to handle things normally.

Reach out for support. Owners should ask for and accept help from those who love them and understand the bond that was shared with the pet. They also should seek guidance from veterinary professionals and mental health professionals when needed.

Determine how to handle the pet's body after death. Cremation and burial are the most common ways. Planning ahead will help owners make decisions they likely will become comfortable with over time.

Avoid comparisons. If owners add another pet to their home, they should avoid comparing the new pet to pets that have died.
